Reynisfjara vs Diamond Beach: what's the difference?
Two of Iceland's most photographed black beaches, often confused, actually hours apart and completely different experiences.

Reynisfjara is the dramatic black sand beach near Vik, with basalt columns, a sea cave and offshore sea stacks, about 180 km from Reykjavik. Diamond Beach sits much further east beside the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, where chunks of glacier ice wash up and glitter on the black sand. They are different experiences roughly two hours apart, so a standard South Coast day trip reaches Reynisfjara but not Diamond Beach, which usually needs a longer tour or a multi-day trip. Reynisfjara: columns, stacks and surf
Reynisfjara is the black beach near Vik, about 180 km and 2.5 hours east of Reykjavik. Its signature is geology: the Gardar basalt columns rising in a hexagonal stair, the Halsanefshellir sea cave, and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks standing offshore in a violent sea. This is the beach from Star Wars: Rogue One and Game of Thrones, and it is famous just as much for its danger, the sneaker waves here have killed visitors. It is the standard, reachable South Coast highlight, included on the usual day trips from the city.
Diamond Beach: ice on the black sand
Diamond Beach is a different animal, much further east on Route 1, beside the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. Here, chunks of ice break off the glacier, drift through the lagoon and wash up on a black beach, where they sit and glitter like scattered diamonds against the dark sand. There are no basalt columns and no sea stacks; the whole draw is the ice. Because it is so far from Reykjavik, well beyond Vik and Reynisfjara, it does not fit on a standard South Coast day and normally calls for a longer single-day tour or a two-day trip.

Which one, and how to see it
If you have a single day out of Reykjavik, Reynisfjara is the realistic choice, and it is a spectacular one. It sits at a comfortable day-trip distance and pairs naturally with the waterfalls, glacier viewpoint and Vik on the same route. Diamond Beach is the pick if you have more time and want the glacier-lagoon ice, but plan for a much longer day or an overnight, since driving to Jokulsarlon and back from the city in winter daylight is a stretch.
For the Reynisfjara option, the easiest way to see it is a guided South Coast day trip from Reykjavik that drives the route and stops at the beach, so you skip the long round trip behind the wheel. If Diamond Beach is your goal instead, look specifically for a Jokulsarlon tour or a multi-day South Coast itinerary, and do not expect a standard South Coast day to reach it.
